How to achieve Mochi Skin and be a Head Turner

Move aside glass skin, the new skincare trend, mochi skin is here. Made popular in Japan, mochi skin is based on the Japanese rice cake dessert, mochi. This skincare trend transforms your skin, making it soft, plump, and free of lines or dryness.

However, why should we take on another skincare routine when we are already satisfied with applying seven layers of toners on our glowy skin? Before we answer that, let us touch on the basics of mochi skin.

What is Mochi Skin?

Also known as “Mochi-Hada” or “rice-cake skin,” the mochi skin look is inspired by the traditional Japanese dessert, mochi. Just like the dessert, your skin is supposed to be plump, poreless, and powdery matte. This attainable skin emphasises a natural look and a minimalistic skincare regime. With that, how is this skincare trend different from glass skin?

Glass Skin Vs Mochi Skin

The aim of glass skin is to achieve a wet skin look that reflects light like a pane of glass whereas the mochi skin trend emphasises the plumpness, softness, and bounciness of the skin. Mochi skin tends to be matte and plump whereas glass skin tends to be dewier and brighter.

One of the most significant differences between glass skin and mochi skin is the number of skincare steps. As you know, to achieve glass skin one must perform the infamous 10 steps skincare routine daily. Whereas for mochi skin, it only takes five steps before your daily skincare routine is completed.

How to Achieve Mochi Skin?

To achieve plump and bouncy cheeks, a high concentration of collagen is needed. You can achieve this by increasing your collagen intake with products like ReFa COLLAGEN ENRICH DRINK or BRAND’S InnerShine RubyCollagen Essence. These products not only reverse the signs of ageing but help improve one’s overall complexion as well.

Cleansing

Start your skincare routine by double cleansing your face. Melt away your makeup with an oil-based cleanser or balm such as the BANILA CO Clean it Zero Cleansing Balm, before following up with a gentle cleanser. We recommend Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser for it not only thoroughly cleanses your skin but it balances your skin’s natural pH level too.

Take note that double cleansing should only be done at night and not twice a day to prevent the removal of healthy oils from your skin. In the morning, you can simply splash water on your face if you have normal or dry skin. If you are acne-prone or have oily skin, use a cleanser that is formulated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, such as the CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser.

Toner/Essence

After cleansing, replenish the moisture on your skin with a toner or an essence. Start with La Roche Posay Physiological Soothing Toner or Hada Labo Super HA Hada Labo Lotion. Unlike regular toners, these toners do not strip the healthy oils off your skin. They also deeply hydrate your skin without causing any irritation.

Serum

Be it dry skin, dull skin, or ageing skin, there’s a serum for everything. Depending on what your skin needs, this step is customisable. However, two types of serums are needed to achieve the desired effect: Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C.

Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles while moisturising the skin. Having hydrated skin is important because it helps radiate and plump one’s skin. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydration Support Formula recharges and rehydrates your complexion with the brand’s patented Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex. It has three forms of molecules, varying in size to penetrate different levels of the skin.

Vitamin C helps diminish the appearance of dark spots, treat hyperpigmentation, even out your skin tone, and boost skin radiance. Products like Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop and By Wishtrend Pure Vitamin C 21.5% Advanced Serum have been cult favourites for years. They not only rejuvenate the skin but brighten the skin’s complexion as well.

Moisturiser

Lock in all the benefits from the previous steps with a moisturiser. Depending on your skin type, the moisturiser you use will be different. SK-II R.N.A. POWER Airy Milky Lotion is a good option for all skin types. This award-winning moisturiser contains concentrated PITERATM with hydrolysed soy and yeast extracts. These key ingredients help plump up the skin from within, giving the skin a healthy glow.

Mask

This step is optional, but sheet masks are a great perk-me-up that helps hydrate and moisturise your skin in under 30 minutes. One of our favourite sheet masks is the Saborino Morning Facial Sheet Mask. It comes in a large pack of 32 sheets, and they could be used daily. The unique factor about this mask is its ability to cleanse, moisturise, and prime the skin in 60 seconds. This is perfect for those who are constantly on the go and have little time to do their daily skincare routine.

SPF

Last but not least, we have sunscreen. SPF is important because it not only defends our skin from sun damage but helps our skin age slower too. Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF 50+ PA+++ spreads easily with a fluid texture, allowing makeup to go on smoothly.
